The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
