A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
